one rochester woman is working to educate the community on the role of women in the islamic tradition which has been a topic of controversey one rochester woman is working to educate the community on dead due to wildfires in california... and more than 2áhundred others remain missing. we want to conduct as thorough a search as we possibly can. but we want to do it in as expedited manner as possible so we can move forward to repopulating those areas. family members and friends of the msising are posting on social media á hoping somehow they were able to escape. but answers are coming in slowly. national guard troops are assisting in the search for victims in northern california. officials estimate the blaze has destroyed nearly 5á hundred homes. and now there's another threat... rain in the forecast á which could one rochester woman is working to educate the community on the role of women in the islamic tradition which has been a topic of controversey in recent years. kimt news 3's brooke mckivergan was at the event and joins us live now, brooke./// katie you may remember regina mustafa from when she ran for mayor in rochester. when she announced her campaign in the raceáshe received (this letter saying she was doing a disservice to all muslims and later on telling her to go back to africa. though regina has taught this course before... after receiving this note... she knew she wanted to help educate members of the rochester community on the role of women in islam.xxx "if ever there were a verse that clearly states the equality of men and women in a religion, it's this verse." tonight members of the rochester community are spending their evening educating themselves. "i don't know much about women in islam and i'd like to correct any misconception s i probably have." "one of the most common misconception s about muslim women is that we are oppressed or somehow that our religion does not give equal rights to women as they do to men." regina points out this verse in the quran which speaks of both sexes as equals. "men and women who pray men and women who fast men and women who give to charity men and women who guard their modesty. its not just saying men... its saying men and women." and as for the common misconception that men are allowed to hit women in this religionáit may come from this verse which directly translates to english... as in the last resort of the worst circumstance where your wife is acting wrong ástrike them. but regina says it doesn't (literally mean to strike someone. "its not it does not leave a connotation of go and beat your woman up. it could be taking her and saying... hey you need to stop what you're doing." and at the end of the dayáshe says she's thankful for anyone who makes an effort to educate themselves in this way because more meaningful friendships and relationships come from a common understanding of one another. "just a better understanding of who their neighbors are who their coworkers are, the parents of their kids friends and just to be able tomorrow night there will be a rise above islamophobia event at the university of minnesota rochester at 6 pám. thank you brooke... and regina says its just coincidence that these events are falling back to back. when a city grows... it's departments need to grow with it. how rochester's fire department is preparing for expansion. plus á we're finding out how the expansion of a popular trail is moving forward á despite a major setback./// it's a day when people will through their cigarettes away
