it's an ongoing problem being felt by families across minnesota... a shortage of childcare. according to the u?s department of human services... the number of providers dropped from 11 thousand to just 9 thousand from 20?11 to 20?16. and people in austin are trying to address this need. kimt news three's annalisa pardo joins us live to tell us how their doing this, and how you can help. this is catherwood childcare, the only childcare facility in austin that is for parents who work shifts outside of the traditional 9 to 5. and organizations are teaming up to help get more families able to use this resource. united way of mower county is just one of the groups helping get the childcare center able to take more families. it's doing this by hosting 4 days of caring... where volunteers put in hundreds of hours to renovate the building... like replacing it's deterioriting front porch. allie gearhart is helping organize the volunteering. she says many people in austin work unusual shifts because of hormel... which is way these improvements are needed. a lot of them have children or multiple children so having a really safe place for them to drop their kids off and be reassured while their at work is really important. having one facility we really need to make sure it's in tip top shape. the volunteering is united way's contribution, while other organizations are helping chatherwood financially. overall, the childcare center is getting about people can volunteer today, or on their last volunteering day which is on september 29th. we have the links to sign up with this story on kimt dot com.
