time./// a major announcement from mayo clinic today. we're learning about a construction plan to expand its gonda building. kimt news 3's annalise johnson joins us live now with the details ? annalise? xxx katie ? i'm here at the gonda building ... which is set to have another 11 levels added to it. four of them will be for clinical care... another seven for a hotel ? to add a hospitality experience... including restaurants and meeting rooms. today i found out how the project will impact the public ? patients and the doctors who treat them. xxx as rochester grows ? the mayo clinic's clientele grows. here's a look at an artists rendering of the project.... mayo's executive dean of practice dr. harper explains with that growth ? comes an increased demand for care. "we have an overwhelming demand for many of our services and particularly in areas we feel are pretty important in terms of strategic growth and demand ? cancer being one ? our surgical practice being the other." dr. buckner ? head of mayo's cancer center says the four floors will positively impact how his department cares for cancer patients. "we need this space to continue to meet that demand. cancer care has become increasingly complicated and so the opportunity to bring new therapies to the patient at the bedside as opposed to having the patient move from place to place is going to be a real plus we believe to serve those patients." and dr. nelson ? chair of department of surgery ? explains the expansion will benefit her department both to give them more space ? and to affect how they work alongside patients. "we also have the possibility of implementing the surgical procedural practice with the medical practice. imagine a patient coming in and never having to leave the gonda facility to get an outpatient procedure." as for the hotel ? dr. harper says a hospitality feature is something mayo patients have requested over the years. "premiere hospitality facilities... there's a bit of a gap and that we need to meet that gap particularly if we're going to be attracting national and international patients and compete with national competitors." as of now ? the plan is to begin the project by the end of 2019 or early 2020 ? construction would wrap up by 2022. dr. harper tells me while mayo does expect some inconviences during construction ? the gonda building will remain open. thank you annalise. once the project is complete... it will make the gonda building the tallest in the rochester skyline.
