derpession and anxiety in college athletes are reaching an all time high... according to the past president of the association for applied sport psychology, dr. brent walker... with stats like 30 percent of college softball players admitting to clinical depression... it's raising red flags with local coaches.xxx you know in sports specialization i see a lot of kids tying who they are to what they do. it's something not many talk about... the stigma is still there... but depression in sports is more prevelant than ever before according to dr. brent walker... if you look at the average student athlete they are spending over 72 1/2 hours a week on athletics and academics that's a quite a load trying to manage all that can be overwhelming.. . especially for females... according to a 2016 british journal of sports medicine study... over 30 percent of softball and female track and field athletes had clinical depression... something niacc softball coach dan gratz doesn't like to see but isn't shocked... i don't think it's surprising from a coaching perspective i see a lot of you know a lot of young kids especially in my sport committing to play college softball and they are 11 and 12 years old before they even get the high school add the hours of batting practice, games, and then the nature of the sport... it can take a toll on your mental health... you're just constantly battling against yourself like this year our best player on our team hit 450 so you know you're failing 55% of the time in the traditional game there's many factors that can attribute to the anxiety and depression these athletes are facing today... but one thing everyone can agree on... there needs to be more steps taken to prevent and treat depression in student athletes... this isn't just an athlete it's an entire person we are dealing with and trying to provide communication and resources to help them experience overall well being give your athletes that separation we for high school softball region play starts tomorrow for 1a and 2a schools... we have five local games we are keeping an eye on including lake mills at
