ROCHESTER, Minn. - For Rose Hansen-Welke, the VFW on 6th St. Southwest isn't just another building.
"This is home, it's home away from home," she said.
And it was a packed house Sunday afternoon and evening. People came out to celebrate the building's last call before the VFW closes it's doors temporarily.
The post is moving to a new location at 2775 43rd St. NW. It's expanding to a bigger building in part to accommodate more people and events. The past 51 years in it's current location means a lot of Rose.
"My husband died a year and a half ago and when he died, he said if you need friends to talk to you go to the VFW. You know all these people," she said. "If you're ever sad anything, come to the VFW, there's always good friends."
Kathy and Bob Lane, who go by Sugar and Buzz, have been coming to the VFW for years and met many of their life-long friends there.
"Everybody always says we're going to V, you know, where you going? Are you going to the V," Kathy said. "It's kind of a big family get together or something."
A family that doesn't break up because of a new building.
"I come across town all the time for it. Because it's still home," Rose said.
"We'll be going there too. No matter if it's 10 miles out, 20 miles out, we'll be going," Kathy said.
The last call celebration also included taking down the American flag that flies outside of the current location.
The new location will be open on May 18th. The VFW will be holding a grand opening ceremony on June 14th.
