OSSIAN, Iowa – A fire at an old fertilizer plant Friday forced the temporary evacuation of a northeast Iowa school.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office says it got a 911 call around 12:15 pm from Farmers Union Coop in Ossian after a fire in the old plant across from the DeSales School and Childcare Center. Because there was still some fertilizer inside the plant, students were evacuated to South Winn Elementary School.

Firefighters quickly brought the flames under control and DeSales students were able to return to class in less than an hour.

Fire crews from Ossian, Calmar, Castalia, and Decorah responded to this emergency, as well as Winneshiek County Emergency Management and Calmar Police.
