Impassable roads, tow bans and power outages. That's how it started Saturday night into Sunday as a severe winter weather hits the viewing area.

The northbound lane of I-35 from Exit 182 to the Minnesota border is closed. "The route is impassable. Look out for drifting snow on the roadway," the Iowa DOT said.

Most major roadways (see the list below) in north Iowa were reported impassable as of 8 p.m. Saturday.

At around 9 p.m., Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Kevin Pals said his office “is receiving multiple calls for vehicles in the ditches throughout the county. Sheriff’s deputies are unable to reach all vehicles currently stuck.
“Cerro Gordo County deputies will only be responding to medical emergencies until further notice. For your safety, and the safety of all emergency responders, please stay off the roads until the weather clears.”

According to the Alliant Energy outage map, 394 customers in Cerro Gordo were without power Saturday night as well.
The outage began at 6:32 p.m., and the outage map reported power was restored just after 8 p.m.
Towing is also not recommended for Post 8 counties (Butler, Cerro Gordo, Floyd, Franklin, Hancock, Kossuth, Mitchell, Winnebago, Worth and Wright counties.) and the I-35 corridor in north Iowa, the Iowa State Patrol said just after 7 p.m.
