ROCHESTER, Minn. - The overnight incident that left five young men with stab wounds and another beaten isn't a scene Demetrious Deal is used to in his neighborhood.
"It was shocking, you know what I'm saying, to hear something like that," Deal said. "There's a lot of teens that have been getting hurt lately and you know there's a lot of strange things going on in Rochester. When I moved here, I thought it would be kind of safe, but it's not the same no more."
He said he moved to Rochester from Chicago and lives down the street from the apartment on 56th St. NW. where the events began late Monday into early Tuesday.
Cpt. John Sherwin with the Rochester Police Department described it as "a mess." That's because as officers were on their way to the call at the apartment around 12:20 a.m. when they were also called to the Holiday gas station on 55th St. That's where they found one of the men beaten and another with several stab wounds.
The other stabbing victims ended up at St. Marys Hospital, making the number of scenes officers responded to three.
"You have officers spread out through the city trying to coordinate and determine what exactly happened," Sherwin said. "Meanwhile, you have witnesses and other people who may be leaving or trying to get away from the scene."
This left officers trying to piece together how the incident left five men stabbed and one badly beaten. It also leaves neighbors, like Deal, concerned.
"I'm always fearful for anyone's kids that walk down in this area," Deal said. "You know my babies are my everything."
