ROCHESTER, Minn. - Mayo Clinic has a new President and CEO.

The Board of Trustees is announcing that Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, Mayo Vice President and CEO of Mayo Clinic in Florida, will replace Dr. John Noseworthy as head of the entire organization.

“I am humbled and proud to follow and build upon this success with the best staff in the world,” says Dr. Farrugia. “While sea change continues to sweep through health care, I look forward to harnessing innovation, a hallmark of Mayo Clinic, to transform health care for the benefit of patients everywhere.”

Dr. Farrugia has been leading Mayo Clinic in Florida since January 2015. In 2017, Mayo Clinic was named the best hospital in Florida in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals Honor Roll and Dr. Farrugia oversaw the opening of the new 190,000-square-foot Harry T. Mangurian Jr. Building for patients seeking cancer, neurology and neurosurgical care.

His relationship with Mayo Clinic began 30 years ago, when he traveled from his home country of Malta to train at the clinic. "That opportunity has made me much more open to the idea and concepts of making sure tht we embrace everybody who needs to come see us, everybody who needs the kind of hope and healing that only Mayo Clinic can provide."

“Dr. Farrugia is a visionary and servant leader who brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge ─ both as an innovator and an executive,” says Dr. Noseworthy. “In partnership with our staff across Mayo Clinic, and with a deep commitment to our values and mission, he will affirm Mayo Clinic’s position as the global health care leader for generations to come.”

Dr. Noseworthy says this is the perfect time for a transition in leadership. "Our patient satisfaction, our staff engagement couldn't be stronger, and we're financially strong and I think that's all good."

KIMT asked Dr. Farrugia if, when he began his medical career, he ever imagined becoming the CEO of Mayo Clinic. "No. I could say more but the answer is no, I don't anybody can imagine."

Lisa Clarke, executive director of the Destination Medical Center Economic Development Agency issued the following statement on Farrugia's promotion:

"Destination Medical Center (DMC) congratulates Gianrico Farrugia, M.D. in his newly elected role as President and CEO of Mayo Clinic, replacing John Noseworthy, M.D. Dr. Noseworthy was instrumental with the formation of DMC and has been steadfast in his support of this initiative. Dr. Farrugia is a visionary and innovative leader with an impressive career with Mayo Clinic. Rochester is experiencing phenomenal growth, and DMC looks forward to continued collaboration with Dr. Farrugia as we partner with Mayo Clinic, the state of Minnesota, local municipalities and community organizations to secure Rochester’s status as a global destination for health and wellness."
