MASON CITY, Iowa – Probation has been handed out in a North Iowa sex abuse case.

Paul Bernard Grell IV, 20 of Mason City, was charged with 3rd degree sexual abuse after authorities say he attacked a woman at his home on February 29, 2016. He was arrested in December 2017 and eventually entered an Alford plea to assault with intent to commit sexual abuse.

Grell has now been sentenced to two years of probation and must register as a sex offender in Iowa. As part of his probation, Grell must spend up to 180 days at a residential correctional facility, get a mental health evaluation and then complete all recommended treatment.

An Alford plea means Grell does not admit guilty but will accept his sentencing.
