CHARLES CITY, Iowa - A Mason City man stands accused of illegally accepting government benefits.
Brian Charles Sachen, 39, is charged with 1st degree theft in Floyd County District Court. According to court documents, Sachen took legal custody of his biological son after the boy's mother died in 2014 and registered to receive government payments on the child's behalf. The boy was then removed from Sachen's custody in 2015 by the Department of Human Services.
Authorities say Sachen failed to notify the government about losing custody of his son and continued to receive benefit payments from June 2015 through September 2016, totaling $10,176.
An arrest warrant was issued for Sachen on June 5 and he was picked up in Mason City on Thursday.
