Mason City man accused of stealing construction equipment

Police say he tried to sell the stolen unit to a company in Florida.

MASON CITY, Iowa – A man accused of stealing an expensive piece of construction equipment is pleading not guilty.

Brett Gerald Wetter, 43 of Mason City, is charged with 1st degree theft and his trial is set to begin on August 7.

A DigiTrak drill locator unit.

Mason City police say they were called to the Southbridge Mall parking lot on February 16. According to court documents, an employee of Precision Point Contracting told the officers he put a DigiTrak drill locator unit on the ground while he went to help a co-worker and the device was gone when he returned.

Officials say the unit is worth $17,525.

Precision Point Contracting says it was then contacted on March 2 by a Florida company that specializes in sales and repair of drill locator units. The company says it had been sent the stolen unit by Wetter. The company gave authorities a text message between Wetter and a company employee and police say the packaging the locator unit was mailed in had Wetter’s home address in Mason City.
