Man sentenced to prison after getting shot

Police investigation led to discovery of drugs.

AUSTIN, Minn. – Getting shot has wound up sending a man to prison.

Jesus Alejandro Ybarra, 24 of Redwood Falls, was shot in the leg on July 8, 2017, in the 800 block of 2nd Avenue SW in Austin. Police say when they asked Ybarra who had shot him, he told officers he wanted an attorney.

Police then searched both the home where Ybarra was living at the time and the nearby home of the suspected shooter, Ramiro Alejandro Pena. Officers say they found about 290 grams of methamphetamine and roughly 45 grams in marijuana in Ybarra’s home, while in Pena’s home police say they found a shotgun, eight rifle rounds, and one round of .45 caliber ammunition.

Ybarra was charged with two counts of 1st degree drug possession. He pleaded guilty to one count and was sentenced Monday to eight years and four months in prison.

Pena pleaded guilty to violent felon in possession of a firearm. His sentencing is scheduled for August 9.
