UPDATE: A hearing on Codie Matz' request for a mental evaluation is scheduled for Monday at 9 am in Cerro Gordo County District Court.

Mason City, Iowa – Codie Matz, accused of killing his grandparents in November, is asking for psychiatric evaluation.

Court documents state that “it reasonably appears that the defendant is suffering from a mental disorder that prevents him from appreciating the charge, understanding the proceedings, and assisting effectively in the preparation of his defense to these charges.”
Matz is facing two counts of first-degree murder and is being held in the Cerro Gordo County Jail.

The documents also states it is “necessary for the defendant to be psychiatrically evaluated, at state expense, for the purpose of determining whether he is suffering from a mental disorder that prevents him from understanding the full ramifications of the charges against him and prohibits him from assisting in his own defense.”

The documents were filed this week.

Authorities say Matz, 25, killed 61-year-old Kenneth Hackbart and 64-year-old Kathleen Hackbart. Officers found their bodies Nov. 7 in Mason City. Matz was arrested later that day in Bondurant, a Des Moines suburb.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. A trial date has been set for Jan. 23, 2018.
