ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Minnesota primary election is less than a week away and KIMT is looking into laws that make voting fair and accessible for everyone.

People with identifiable disabilities have a number of rights to help them vote independently.

Buff Hennessey works with The Arc of Southeastern Minnesota, which helps advocate for people with disabilities.

“They're an integral part of our society and have a lot of opinions like other people do. So, it's actually their right to vote and their right to be part of that political process. And the more inclusive we are in our decision making the better decisions are made,” she said.

In Minnesota, people with disabilities are able to ask someone to go into the booth with them as long as it is not the person’s employer or a candidate. A person can even mark the ballot for someone who may not be able to physically, as long as it was communicated before hand who to vote for.

No one is allowed to influence voting. Hennessey encourages everyone to go out and vote.

“You know, to really have representative government, you need have all parts of your population be part of that and have the opportunity to say who is representing you,” she said.
