MASON CITY, Iowa - Wooz's, the full-service gas station and car wash that has been in operation since 1972, will soon close its doors for the last time.
The business will be sold to the La Crosse, Wisconsin-based Kwik Star chain.
The station is located in the Southport parking lot, an area that has seen declining business, with the Driver's License Center and Tobacco Center being the only other businesses in that location.
Sharon Heimbuch has been coming to Wooz's since it first opened, for gas and car washes.
"I always had a dirty car and they always took care of it."
Steve Pirkle has been coming since he got his first driver's license, and will miss owner Henry Pirhonen and his employees.
"The people that he hires to work here to give gas to the people and stuff. He really hires some really neat people like Chandler and Levi."
Almost all customers will miss something that's going out of style - the convenience of a full-service gas station.
"I'm used to coming here to get gas. So I would give them a try if they helped me. I don't get gas in my car often enough to remember how to do it. That's why I need help," Jody Kerr says.
John McCorkle, who has worked with Pirhonen for 43 of those 46 years, will ultimately miss one thing, their customers.
"Because they're all a different breed. Everybody is a different person...and I'm gonna miss that."
Now he says it's time to look toward the future.
"I've got some options that I'm looking into."
The business was originally slated to close later this week, but that may be changing. While on scene Tuesday afternoon, a realtor who is handling the deal showed up. Now, Pirhonen is saying the last day of business may change. Stay with KIMT for the latest.
