MASON CITY, Iowa - “We lived in our home for 50 years and now that we are retired and don't get around as good we moved into a condo,” Elberta Crowe said.
Crowe and her husband will tell you they feel safe where they live in Mason City.
“We keep our doors locked and friendly with our neighbors we are all helpful with each other,” Crowe said.
Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Kevin Pals says now is the time when crime will pick up.
Keeping doors locked isn't the only step you can take to stay safe now that nice weather is here, have locks on your windows, don't keep important items in plain sight and have a way to call for help when needed.
“Unfortunately senior citizens are a targeted group of people that thieves, burglars, and scam people are targeting and I think a lot of it is a lot of seniors are living alone and that loneliness can be a vulnerable area for people,” Pals said.
