CHARLES CITY, Iowa – A New Hampton man has been arrested for the death of a child in Floyd County.
The Charles City Police Department says Shane Michael Morris is charged with 1st degree murder and child endangerment resulting in death. He was arrested Monday with the assistance of the New Hampton Police Department.
Charles City police say they started an investigation into the possible abuse Morris’ 3 and ½ month old child on August 3, 2019.
According to court documents, the child was in Morris’ care that morning before being taken first to the Floyd County Medical Center and then flown to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Medical staff observed a large bulge on the side of the child’s head and tests revealed a skull fracture that was “a likely result of non-accidental trauma.”
The criminal complaint states Morris told medical personnel several times he did not know of anything which could have caused the child’s injuries and initially denied to law enforcement that anything happened to the child that morning. But investigators say Morris eventually told them he tripped while carrying the child in his arms, with the child’s head hitting the edge of a kitchen counter, and Morris then falling on top of the child.
The child died on August 4, 2019. An autopsy performed by the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner's Officer condluded the death was a homicide.
