FREEBORN COUNTY, Minn. - The Freeborn County Government Board of Commissions has declared a state of emergency due to damage around the county.
The county said it believes “this will be a longer than average outage event” and calls it a dangerous situation.
“Numerous power lines have been damaged or destroyed resulting in power outages and fallen lines. This is an extremely dangerous situation. Freeborn County is recommending limited travel in the affected areas."
More than 200 utility poles were reported down Thursday morning.
"Watch for power lines across the road and low hanging lines over the road. Some roads are temporarily shut down until the area is made safe. Please be patient and anticipate taking an alternate route. Surrounding counties have similar issues," the Freeborn County Sheriff's Office said.
Several county and township roads are still impassable due to downed power lines. Authorities are asking people to please refrain from traveling in affected areas. Three Shelters will be made available for those without power starting at 5pm Thursday April 11, 2019 until further notice. The locations are as follows:
o Clarks Grove Fire Hall, 101 Independence Ave N, Clarks Grove, MN
o Alden Community Center, 502 W. Street, Alden, MN
o Albert Lea Armory, 410 Prospect Ave, Albert Lea, MN
Those wishing to stay in the shelters should bring all prescribed medications and medical equipment.
