MASON CITY, Iowa – With residents from the Country Meadow Place peering out windows, a water tower that has stood for decades was torn down Wednesday morning by Dean Snyder Construction.

It didn’t take crews long, about 8 seconds, to take down a tower that has stood for years near Memorial Park Cemetery.

A look at a water tower in Mason City after it was torn down Wednesday.

For resident Pat Bjerke, not seeing the the familiar structure outside her window is going to be different.

"We use it as a landmark if we're coming out here for something, and that will be gone, so we'll have to have a new landmark," Bjerke says.

The site the tower was on, along with three other buildings, will be used for a 21,000 sq. ft., 32-room expansion, with construction to start sometime next month. Bjerke says the expansion is needed since the facility is typically at capacity.

"I think more space is needed, and so it will be good to have it built on," Bjerke adds.
