MASON CITY, Iowa- Bill White is on his third year volunteering to help kids walk to school safely and through the years he's had kids open up to him about what they go through at home.
“It's hard because you can't do anything just verbally, you can't give them a hug or anything like that, and they do need support,” White said.
He’s referring to kids opening up about fighting at home saying if the conversation is really concerning he'll report it to his boss. He feels strongly that child abuse needs to be talked about in communities more often.
“It should be talked about more and brought out more and hopefully it will be brought out more,” White said.
North Iowa’s Court Appointed Special Advocate Program, also known as CASA, is starting a discussion Tuesday night about child abuse at Charles City's Public Library. They’re also showing a film called "Removed". The event is open to the public and they're hoping you attend so you understand that kids are being abused and learn how to help. White says he'd like to see kids feel safe enough to report abuse more often.
“The children can tell what's going on, if they wouldn't have any repercussions, that would be hard to get them out and to talk about what's going on,” White said.
The event starts at 6pm Tuesday night, the movie will show first with a discussion to follow.
