CHARLES CITY, Iowa - Around 500 people will be out of work when Simply Essentials, a chicken processing plant, closes its doors in early August.
Employees were notified of the closure via a letter and a meeting Thursday. KIMT spoke to a worker Friday who will be affected.
The plant, as well as its office, and four ranch worksites in Osage, Ogden, Stratford and Radcliffe will close Aug. 5. 513 people, including administration and field operations, will either be laid of or terminated, according to the letter.
Feliz Gonzales is one of those affected. He says the news came as a shock.
"All the people were surprised by the news they gave us because we thought the company was doing well."
Nearby, the Bread of Life Market is a popular place for workers to grab food while on breaks. Allie Novak is an employee there, and has friends being impacted.
"They just bought a new truck, thinking they have all this employment and everything. His employer said with the circumstances, they'll take him back, but his wife will be out of a job by the time August hits. I have another friend who just had a baby who will be out of a job come August too."
In addition, she feels that local businesses could feel an impact from the news.
"It helps our business and everyone around us for their business. It's going to hurt a lot of people in town."
Calls to the corporate and local offices have not been returned.
The company is pointing employees towards resources such as IowaWORKS to obtain employment. In addition, QPS Employment in Charles City will be offering interview days throughout the month of June: on the 10th, 13th, 19th, 21st, 24th and 26th.
