MASON CITY, Iowa - Cerro Gordo County will remain with Community Social Services (CSS).

At Tuesday morning's meeting, the County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to drop their application to move to the Central Iowa Community Services (CICS) and remain with the CSS, which is part of the state's system on community-based, person-centered mental health and disability services.

The county initially was looking into creating their own region and partner with surrounding Hancock, Winnebago, Worth and Kossuth counties, but this was dropped in favor of moving to the 11-county member CICS instead. The board voted to move to CICS and sent a letter of intent to the agency in August.

Supervisor Chris Watts says that they took into account several factors about switching over.

"We were impressed with their leadership team and the fact that they wanted to maintain their size. They're at 11 counties right now versus we're in a 22 county region. And big isn't always better."

After Tuesday's decision, he says the county is evaluating their options going forward

"We're hoping to see what changes the state legislature makes when they convene again and see what kind of effect that that has on our decision going forward."

Winnebago County Supervisor Bill Jensvold says that his county, who applied to move to the Northwest Iowa Care Connection, is wanting to move out of CSS because their return on investment has not been good, and because of the deterioration of confidence in the agency.
