CHARLES CITY, Iowa- Taps - it’s more than just a song. It’s a way to honor and remember fallen veterans. The emotional melody is typically played by trumpets or a bugle, but an instrument used to pay respects in Charles City is currently missing.
Local veterans and brothers, Bruce and Arthur White, of Charles City, say their ceremonial bugle has been missing for about two weeks. They say they were going to play it at a funeral, but when they went to use it the bugle was gone.
The bugle only costs around $600, but Arthur says it’s not about the money. It’s about the emotional and historic value.
“You can buy them, but we would like the other one back,” he said. “There is some history to it.”
The White brothers say if a veteran does die while the bugle is missing they will have to use an old boom box which they used before they had the bugle, but say it doesn’t produce the same sound.
