AUSTIN, Minn. – Police say a woman’s bank saved her from criminals pretending to be law enforcement.
An Austin woman called the Mower County Law Enforcement Center on Tuesday and said she’d gotten a call from someone claiming to be from the Austin Police Department. The caller asked the woman for bank account information to pay bail on a federal warrant.
Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger says his department does not call anyone regarding federal warrants and does not ask for banking information. The woman says her caller ID listed the number as “Austin Police Department” but Kruger says all Austin police calls should show up as coming from the Mower County Law Enforcement Center.
The woman told police she gave out her banking information to the caller but her bank recognized it as a fraud and refused to release any funds.
