ALBERT LEA, Minn. – When a vehicle plunged into Albert Lea’s Fountain Lake on Wednesday, bystanders quickly jumped into action to help save an elderly woman.
Authorities said two people were taken to the hospital after a vehicle went into the lake around 11:30 a.m.
The Albert Lea Police Department says Barbara Gilbertson, 87 of rural Alden, lost control of her vehicle in the lower parking lot of City Hall, traveled across Fountain Street, hit a bench and a tree, and then went into the water.
Police say when they arrived on scene, three civilians were in the water removing Gilberston from the vehicle.
Jolene Helgeson was one of the bystanders that went to Gilbertson's aid.
"We were yelling at her to roll her window down so we could pull her out we had to have her unbuckle her seatbelt and then we were able to open the door by then because the water was starting to come into her cab," said Helgeson.
She and a civilian who was in the lake were transported to Mayo Clinic Health System-Albert Lea for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Albert Lea Fire Rescue, Mayo Ambulance, Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources assisted at the scene.
An investigation into this incident is underway.
