CHARLES CITY, Iowa - Each month, KIMT News 3 and our Giving Your Best Partners, Diamond Jo Casino and First Citizens Bank, honors some who go above and beyond to give back to their community.

Our April Volunteers of the Month are Jessamy Orcutt and Allen Murray. They are the founders of Transcend North Iowa, an organization dedicated to supporting people who are transgender, non-binary or gender non-conforming.

"Our son came out as transgender about two years ago and we were sort of looking around for resources for him and we just couldn't find any. So we decided to start a support a group," said Orcutt.

The group is continuing to grow.

"We started with 4 people at our very first meeting and now we do meetings in 3 different locations. We do advocacy, outreach, training. We have a clothing closet for people who want to come refresh their wardrobe," Orcutt said.

"Being transgender is often a really lonely experience and having a support group like this is so important," said Eliott Bowers, who nominated Orcutt and Murray for the award.

"They really do deserve to be recognized for, not just what they do for me, but what they do for all of us here in Transcend, and essentially what they do for the transgender community throughout the area here in Iowa," said Bowers.

"Really overwhelmed and grateful. I'm kind of on the verge of tears because just knowing that what we do makes a difference and that people really appreciate it and that you know we are helping somehow.  It makes us want to work that much harder," Orcutt said.
