OLMSTED COUNTY, Minn. - It is the deadliest crash on a Minnesota road in nearly a decade. Six people - three from Minnesota and three from Wisconsin - were killed early Friday in a wrong-way collision on Interstate-90 near Eyota.

The Minnesota State Patrol said the following people were killed in the crash:

Occupants of the Chrysler Sebring:
Christopher Peterson, 26, Rochester, Minn.
Ester Peters, 47, Rochester, Minn.
Shayla Peterson, 23, Paynesville, Minn.

Occupants of the Ford Focus:
Sheila Eagle, 54, Waukesha, Wis.
Tamara Eagle, 29, Waukesha, Wis.
Nyobee Eagle Richardson, 11, Waukesha, Wis.

The crash happened around 1:30 Friday morning in the westbound lane of I-90 between the Marion Rest Area and Highway 42/Co. Rd. 7 interchange. One of the vehicles caught fire after the crash. Authorities said two of the people killed were not wearing seat belts and they could not determine whether the other four people were buckled or not.

The Minnesota State Patrol said this was the deadliest crash on a Minnesota road since 2010.

“Preliminary reports indicate a vehicle was going the wrong way, heading eastbound, when it struck another vehicle heading westbound on I-90 near milepost 223,” law enforcement said.

The two vehicles involved were a 2005 Chrysler Sebring and a 2008 Ford Focus. Investigators said it appears the Ford Focus was traveling on the wrong side of the road.

The cause is still under investigation. The westbound lanes of the Interstate were closed for several hours as investigators processed the scene.

I-90 re-opened in both directions at around 7:30 a.m.
