MASON CITY, Iowa - Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa now has a machine that can help doctors more reliably identify breast cancer.
Doctors at the Forest Park Clinic now have a 3D mammography machine. It’s meant to see through dense breast tissue in order to help spot tumors that may have been hidden by a traditional mammogram.
Dr. Gary Swenson would tell you it's not meant for all women but he says those with heterogeneously dense breast tissue seem to benefit the most.
“I was really excited it’s been a long wait. We've known about the technology for a long time but it’s been very slow coming through the drug and food administration and getting approved nationwide,” Dr. Swenson said.
Swenson says this machine will find 40 percent more breast cancer in the general population, but he says patients need to keep in mind that not all health insurance companies will cover the cost for this specialized type of mammogram.
