MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - University of Minnesota athletics director Joel Maturi has signed a two-year contract extension through 2012. His annual salary has been increased to $345,000. Since he was hired in 2002, the Chisholm native has experienced several ups and downs as the leader of Gophers sports. His first task was to merge the often-contentious men's and women's athletics departments. He's taken heat for some of his high-profile hires and for expensive buyouts of coaches who weren't cutting it, but he also lured Tubby Smith to campus to coach the men's basketball team and helped secure more than $77 million in private funds for a new football stadium. University president Robert Bruininks praised Maturi for his work through the challenges.
