Severe Weather in the Gym by Jeff Zell

Austin, MN

Storm Draayer turned 10-years-old two weeks ago. He celebrated one week late with his 3rd and 4th NASA Weightlifting titles.

Draayer is now a two-time NASA Youth and 114-Pound Open Weightlifting champion.

"This is what he's talented at," Christian Draayer, Storm's father, said. 'This is what he has the genetics to do. We might as well have him take it as far as he can."

The titles and hardware is impressive, but the fact Draayer had heart surgery six months ago, makes his accomplishments even more special.

"First I was really (scared) that I had to get surgery," Storm said.  "I thought it would be very painful."

Storm weathered that storm and just a week later he was back in the gym.

Storm has been lifting weights since he was 3 years old. He used a broomstick as a bar to perfect his form.

His dad says he can lift 95-pounds now.

Storm plans on competing in the Minnesota State Weightlifting Championship on June 7th.
