MASON CITY, IA - East Park in Mason City was taken over by grills, smokers, inflatables and more this weekend.
The North Iowa Up In Smoke BBQ Competition celebrated it's 10th anniversary this year in Mason City and after a whole day of cooking, sampling and judging, the winner of the competition was the Tippy Canoe BBQ Crew from St. Ansger, Iowa.
Teams came from all across the U.S. to compete in the even this weekend and one team made the trek all the way from the deep south.
The Texas Rib Rangers showcased a Mexican corn bread for their submission in the "Anything But" category and they had crowds lined up at their stand all weekend to get a taste of their dry rubs and BBQ sauces.
Pit Master, Bill Milroy said, "I love coming up here. The park is excellent, they do a great job of putting the event on and you couldn't ask for a better bunch of people to run the event."
Darren Warth, Pit Master and owner or Smokey D's BBQ had his eye on the prize.
After winning the championship with partner A Boy and his BBQ, he was determined to defend his title for another year.
"We were really lucky last year," Warth said. "Our business partner Chad from A Boy and his BBQ had gotten three top 5 calls and we got a third place in the brisket, but out points overall ended up winning the whole things so we got pretty lucky."
Hoping that luck would be on their side again this year they stuck to a recipe they have been using in the last 23 competitions they have been in this year.
Much like every other competition, there can only be one winner and the Tippy Canoe BBQ Crew took the championship this year.
The event lasts through Sunday evening in East Park in Mason City.
