ROCHESTER, Minn. - It has been home to the Mayo Clinic for more than a century now, but some recent changes to Rochester are making the city grow.
Not only are people moving there, they are liking where they live and a new list could have more people flocking to southern Minnesota.
Whether it is the Mayo Clinic, the location, the people or the atmosphere, there are many reasons why people enjoy Rochester.
“I love the city because I feel it's warm and welcoming, it's clean, I love the river walk, the shopping is great and I feel the people are friendly,” said Priscilla Hovlend of Fergus Falls.
Hovlend has to drive more than four hours to get to Rochester from her home in Fergus Falls, but it is a place she could call home.
“I wouldn't mind living here,” Hovlend said.
She is not alone. Rochester made the list of top 100 places in the U.S. to live for 2014 by livability.com. They are the highest ranked Midwest city at number six.
“It just shows people what a great city this is to not only work and live, but to raise a family, quality of life issues,” said Brad Jones, Executive Director of the Rochester Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Not to mention, if people are searching the internet Rochester will pop under some good news.
“When people start looking throughout the internet and start researching places to open businesses, places to live, this is one of those things that comes up,” Jones said.
Jones said they also use it as one of their tools to help improve the city.
“Some of the things we can do almost immediately is continue to improve the business climate here. There are some things that we could implement in the next couple of years that would continue to make us grow,” Jones said.
In the meantime, they will continue to capitalize on what got them on the list in the first place.
“Part of it is the Mayo Clinic and all of the services they offer at their hospitals and the care that they give to all of the people here,” Hovlend said.
The population is just over 100 thousand people now, but if they keep those like Hovlend impressed it could become more.
St. Paul was the only other Minnesota city to make the list. Five Iowa cities made the top 100, including Cedar Rapids, Ames and Iowa City in the top 50.
