REDWOOD FALLS, Minn. (AP) — The Farmfest forum was billed as "finding the endgame to a farm bill. But U.S. Reps. Collin Peterson and Tim Walz say they can't see a clear path forward for breaking the impasse over the legislation.
The Democrat-led Senate, in a bipartisan vote, approved a farm bill that governs farm programs and food stamps. But the Republican-controlled House passed a bill for farm programs only, splitting off legislation for nutrition programs so they can seek deeper cuts to food stamps.
The Free Press of Mankato reports (http://bit.ly/1cHe7k1 ) Peterson told the crowd at Farmfest Tuesday he's not hopeful because any compromise that Senate and House negotiators devise will be opposed by a majority of House Republicans.
