OSAGE, Iowa - Wednesday women across the country are taking a little extra time to hone in on their health.
Today is National Women's Wellness Day and a north Iowa fitness center is serving as an official host site.
"It's hard, you get involved with things in the house, the home, the family."
Shannon Paulus is like many working women and finding time for fitness is easier said than done.
That’s why today instead of a lunch break, she's taking time to get some exercise.
"Stats show that women don't take care of themselves, we always come last, and our family comes first. If we're not taking care of ourselves we can't take care of our family,” says Paulus.
But a busy schedule can make that easier said than done. Paulus was just elected to be 3rd District Supervisor for Mitchell County, and while the past few months have been busy she's found ways to stay active.
"Well the last 8 weeks has been a lot of walking door to door going to houses and stuff, prior to that it was just 1/2 an hour walking the dogs."
On this National Women's Wellness Day, women like Paulus are gathering at the Cedar River Complex to take advantage of free access to the fitness center.
"It's mainly just promoting women and wellness so we just decided to have women free all day to classes or just using the building to work out,” says Program Manager, Carrie Barker.
Those who attended the event also learned tips to stay healthy and motivated.
Along the track there are signs like this one letting the women know that a one hour workout is only 4% of their day.
"It's so hard to make that time, so if you just get into a routine of making that time everyday whether it's late morning early morning late evening,” adds Barker.
State and environmental leaders gathered in southern Minnesota to talk about improving the state's infrastructure.
Around the country, statistics are showing we're becoming more health conscious and both Iowa and Minnesota are setting the trend.
