MASON CITY, Iowa - MASON CITY, Iowa - With the rising cost of attending college, saving for school is on many people's minds and it turns out the old saying "it's never too early to start" is true in this case.
The Dixon’s know just how important it is to save for their kids' college education.
“We have an older daughter that's in the vet program at Iowa State so we understand how expensive college is,” explains Michelle Dixon.
So when Michelle heard about an opportunity to enter her children for a scholarship drawing she jumped at it and signed them up.
"They advertised about this Iowa scholarship drawing for one thousand dollars scholarship and they had a couple computers set up and people were encouraged to register then."
And lucky for this family, one of their children won, little Hannah, who just turned one years old.
"Very surprised! Because I knew there were only going to be two given away in the whole state,” adds Michelle.
It’s called the College Savings Iowa, summer giveaway scholarship.
Applying was as simple as registering online.
"Her mother registered during our summer give away and all people have to do is go to college savings iowa.com and register... And they won!” says Michael Fitzgerald.
The scholarship was presented to Hannah and her family by Fitzgerald, the State Treasurer.
"College is getting away from us, it's so expensive a lot of families are saying we're not going to send our kids to college so one of the answers is start saving early,” says Fitzgerald.
For now, toys are much more interesting to Hannah Dixon than her giant scholarship check.
But one day she'll be able to put the money to good use, furthering her education.
