AUSTIN, Minnesota - Today is the United Way of Mower County’s annual Day of Daring.
It’s an event where hundreds of people pitch in to lend a helping hand.
"I was always helping a lot of people when I could do it so now it's really nice to have it come back on you,” says homeowner Everett “Bud” Hertle.
More than 250 volunteers are taking part in Day of Caring today, including a group of us from KIMT.
“We are at Bud's house today we are helping with washing windows, cleaning woods just some household chores that he has a little bit of a difficult time with,” says KIMT’s Raquel Hellman.
Which is what Day of Caring is all about. Community volunteers are reaching out and helping neighbors with projects they might not be able to do on their own.
"It's a good way for us to come back together and get to know our neighbors and start that conversation about how do we start to help one another again,” says Mandi Schmidt with the United Way.
Bud built his home in 1992 and while he can still do a lot on his own, he needs a hand doing some chores which is where we stepped in
"I think every body's duty is to give back to their community and this is a great way for us to do it because we see the direct result. We see someone who it's impacting and someone who we can help and see the rewards of our work too,” adds Hellman.
"It just makes me feel so good because I can't do it myself and it's just wonderful that people will step in and help a person like me out,” says Bud.
State and environmental leaders gathered in southern Minnesota to talk about improving the state's infrastructure.
