Good Samaritan Administrator Speaks by Colleen O'Shaughnessy
KIMT News 3

ALBERT LEA, MN - At least a half dozen former workers at the Good Samaritan Society in Albert Lea are accused of abusing patients.  Police have filed more than twenty charges against Brianna Broitzman and Ashton Larson.  Four other teens are being tried as juveniles.  Investigators claim they did things like poke elderly people in private places, or they simulated sexual acts to upset or arouse them.

Director of Nursing Services Renae Peterson said when she heard the accusations she was in, "absolute shock.  Just could not fathom how that could happen."

Administrator Mark Anderson said it's hard to believe his former employees did what they are accused of doing.  But he said as soon as he learned about it, "my co-workers rolled up their sleeves the day we found out about it and worked very hard to correct it."

Now the home's workers are trying to move forward.  But they realize, they have to be honest about the past.

"We're not going to hide anything.  We're going to share and tell upfront," explained Anderson.

Every day they must face the families of their patients and prove to them that their loved ones are safe at Good Samaritan.  Anderson said it's difficult to admit something happened, but believes the actions of a small group of girls do not represent the level of skill and care found at this nursing home.

"Our hearts are in the right place.  We're moving forward.  Our heads are held up high.  We care," he added.
