Mason City, IA- Jerry Clemons walks his Mason City neighborhood everyday. He said he walks a mile or farther. The exercise and fresh air is what keeps him going said Clemons.
Rain or shine, Clemons is hitting the pavement.
"If it's raining I wait until it quits," said Clemons.
Right now, Clemons thinks it's nearly perfect for a stroll.
"It's nice out but it's a little slippery. You got to watch the ice," said Clemons.
He said slick conditions aren't going to keep him from his daily walk.
"I haven't fallen and I've been walking for a long time," said Clemons.
Apparently, Clemons is one of the lucky ones.
"It's unfortunate people will fall when we have icy conditions...end up with pains and strains," said Doctor Robert Friedriechs, chiropractor.
Friedriechs has patients who have taken a spill or two on the ice. He said Clemons daily exercise regimen helps keep him safe.
"That enables you to be more balanced and coordinated and reaction time improved," said Clemons.
If you do slip on the ice, there is a way to fall. Freidrichs said it's best to tuck and roll.
Both men said it's also a good idea to pay attention where you walk. Clemons said looks can be deceiving.
"It looks like it could be OK but it can be real slippery," said Clemons.
