Mason City, IA - Mason City Police are trying to find the vandals who turned some cars into targets over the weekend. Nearly a half a dozen families discovered damage to their cars on Saturday morning. The windows were smashed out on vehicles, south and east of Fourth Street and Taft Avenue.
One family says this is another headache in a woeful year.
"Where we used to live we were vandalized twice there in eight years so i that isn't a bad average. Ok, here, once in three weeks that isn't starting off good," said Tom Ball.
The welcome wagon didn't drop off a basket when the Balls moved into a new home in Mason City three weeks ago. Instead Tom says he got his "how do you do" from hoodlums when they tossed a rock through his windshield.
"You know it's not been a good summer it's just one more thing," said Tom.
Several other nearby car owners suffered the same fate. The broken out windshields may not look so bad, but it's a fix that will set you back at least a couple hundred bucks. Tom says paying out that kinda cash and having this kinda damage is certainly not what his family or wallet needed. It's been a rough year. The Balls have moved twice since they lost their Mason City home during this spring's flooding. A boost in insurance rates is something they don't need The vandals left behind their ammo but that's not the kind of memento or ending Tom is wishing for.
"Somehow we should find who is responsible and we have them pay for it. I don't to pay for it."
Tom says the police told him they suspect the vandals were probably driving in a pick-up. If you have any information about the vandalism, call Crime Stoppers of North Central Iowa at 1-800-383-0088. There could be a reward.
