Hit and Run near Garner by Brian Scott
KIMT News 3

It was just another night. David Ackerman and his wife Jeanette were out for some late night pie and coffee, but as they drove home early Sunday morning, another car approached.

"I couldn't believe this was happening. I couldn't believe it had happened," said Ackerman.

On the lonely stretch of Highway 69, they say a white SUV quickly came up behind them.

"I didn't see any flashing lights, but I thought only an emergency vehicle had any business going that fast, it must be that," said Jeanette.

But she was wrong. The white SUV tried to pass them, and slammed into the rear of their car. The back left side was banged up and the tire was blown out. As David and Janette were coming down Highway 69, the white SUV struck them on the side, bounced off and continued going, and the big thing here, is that the SUV never stopped to make sure everything was OK.

"I thought, don't be judgmental," said Jeanette. "It's an accident, and I was gonna say that to them when they stopped, but they never stopped."

Besides David recovering from unrelated hip surgery, they're shaken, but OK.

"She religiously drives the speed limit and is a very safe driver, that's what probably saved us," said Ackerman about his wife.

"I have a lot of family here, I don't want them to die. Really, most important to me is that that person steps-up and admits that they did this, and keeps other people safe.," said Jeanette.

They say it was dark out and the SUV was going very fast, but they know it was a white SUV with Iowa license plates starting with the letters "BDA". If you have any information that may help the investigation, please contact the Hancock County Sheriff's Department at (641) 923-2621.
