Marble Rock City Employee Firing Stirs Controversy by Cole Mathisen
KIMT News 3
Marble Rock, IA- A North Iowa city worker is fired.  Then the city council decides to reverse that decision at the end of it's meeting last night.

"I'll make a motion to reinstate Paul (Guthart) until for a period, until the trial," said one Council Member at Monday’s meeting.

"I'll second that," replied a second council member.

"You're out of order," declared Mayor Doug Merfeld.

To which the crowd responded with laughter.

As you read there, an attempt by Marble Rock's Mayor to stop the council last night didn't get far.

City maintenance worker Paul Guthart was fired by the Mayor last week.  He claims Guthart failed to lock gate's on the city's lagoon, its dump, did not use a time clock and also harassed Marble Rock citizens.

The Mayor says he was concerned about children's safety, but some folks don't think the city employee should have been fired.

"Am I correct for what I did because I did what I thought was right and so I felt it had to be done," Merfeld said.

"He was doing his job, there was no reason for the Mayor to terminate him, he had no reason for it," said Amy Titus.

We talked to Guthart on Tuesday; he was unable to comment until he talks to his attorney.

He has 30 days to file for a city council hearing to appeal his termination.
