CHARLES CITY, IA - There is new information about the Charles City fireworks accident from last Friday. The Floyd County Medical Center has confirmed it has released all 12 of the people it was caring for. A total of 37 people needed care for burns, cuts and scrapes.
We spoke to two of those injured about their experience. They were hit in their legs, arms, and one of them even caught some of it in the face. Both of them are pregnant, and they say they immediately went to the ground and covered their stomachs to protect their babies. They were then brought by ambulance to the Floyd County Medical Center. They said it was one of the scariest experiences they've ever been through.
"Everyone was like running and screaming and it was...scary actually," said Aimee Deetz.
"He was like in front of us so that we weren't getting hit and he got hit pretty good. He got hit in the stomach and like, he was bloody from the shoulders down," said Brittany Dana about a man who protected them from the fireworks.
Brittany said that man who was protecting them had to be airlifted out. They say they saw others who also seemed to have serious burns. We also received a statement from the fireworks company J & M displays. They say this was a shell malfunction and they are working with investigators to find out why it happened.
