Charles City, IA- Charles City city leaders are closing off some folks Fourth of July tradition.

Dede Maloy and her family got a boat three years ago. She lives just a few blocks away from the Cedar River in Charles city. Maloy says that's were they spend much of their summer and she's one of many that spends her Fourth on the river.

"It's nice and fun kids decorate it with Americana stuff and we pick up friends sometimes along the river and they join us for the fireworks," said Maloy.

But this year the Maloy's are going to have to find a new place to watch the show. The latest floods are causing the city to close off the Cedar River.

"There' quite a bit of debris in the river in particular the suspension bridge," said Charles City City Administrator, Tom Brownlow.

The river will be closed off from the Main Street Bridge to the Northern city limits. Charles City's historical suspension bridge still lies along that path along with everything else that was caught up in the current the day the floods hit.

"The debris is a safety hazard and we want to protect the public," said Brownlow.

Maloy says she'd rather change her plans than risk damaging her boat.
