AMES, IA - They survived a tornado, now some Iowa firefighters are on their way to California to battle wildfires.
Ryan Schalter, a fire specialist with the Iowa DNR-State Forestry Nursery says three firefighters were dispatched to the Iron Complex of fires in northern California.
Two of the three men are from the Parkersburg. They are putting tornado clean-up on hold while they help firefighters in California.
Blake Harris is a college student from
Parkersburg, IA. His family recently lost their house and his car was totaled in the tornado one month ago Wednesday.
Jessie Farley is also from the Parkersburg area. Jessie was working at the Grocery Store or the Pizza Ranch and led people into a safe room during the tornado, also lost his car.
Micah Westphal is from
Woodward, IA , and a member of the Woodward Volunteer Fire Department.
These men are part of a 20 person crew. So far, the fires have charred more than 2,900 acres.
