Cerro Gordo County, IA- Ventura and Clear Lake are installing new sirens in the area. The new system offers more protection with less sirens. Authorities say they're more reliable and louder than the old ones. Right now, some of the sirens date back to World War II. During the last warning, three of the older sirens failed.
"We hope to be able to offer the residents good protection during any severe weather that would threaten us so people that may not have basements can get to our tornado shelter," said Jim Frederick, Ventura City Council.
The new sirens are expected to be installed July.
