Road Crews Urge Drivers to Slow Down by Cristina Frank
KIMT News 3

Hartland, MN - A road construction worker is dead after he's hit by a car while working on a road project near Minneapolis. And now local highway officials are reminding drivers to slow down.

Crews are filling potholes in Freeborn County. The Minnesota Department of Transportation says most drivers don't slow down in work zones.

"There's not much protection for them. And just like I say the common sense rule, the safety rules: slowing your car down, moving over to the other lane, paying attention to what's going on around you, being aware that these people are working out here," Minnesota Department of Transportation Highway Maintenance Supervisor Tom Fargusson said.

"And it's going to make it that much safer for those guys out there working. We....we sure appreciate it, you know, if you slow down and just pay attention to the signs because we don't have time to be looking over our shoulders. And the only thing between us and those cars are those little plastic cones," Fargusson said.

Fines in Iowa and Minnesota are doubled in work zones.
