MASON CITY, IA - Hundreds of volunteers are helping out area food banks. Saturday members of the Cerro Gordo chapter of the National Association of Letter Carriers collected canned food along with the mail. It's part of the national "stamp out hunger" food drive.
They've teamed up with Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank and the United Way of North Central Iowa to gather up more donations than ever. We caught up with letter carriers and volunteers in Mason City as they sorted through cans and boxed dinners. This year's goal is 21,000 pounds, 25% more than last year.
Volunteer Jo Callicotte explained, "the way they came up with 21,000 pounds - that's one small can for every single person who lives in Cerro Gordo County."
If you forgot to leave your cans outside Saturday morning, the letter carriers told us you can drop them off at the post office on Monday. They say neither rain nor sleet will stop them from getting the cans to the food bank.
