A Fisherman's Paradise in Clear Lake by Michael Benning
KIMT News 3

Clear Lake, IA- North Iowa fishermen have plenty of reasons to smile this spring. Many anglers say they are catching their limit on Clear Lake in only a matter of hours. But is it a good or bad sign for the lake? When it comes to good storytelling Titonka’s Butch Giesking has 75 years of practice.

"Once I caught 75 stripers in about two hours," said Giesking.

But these days on Clear Lake, the tall tales of good fishing are true.

"When they're hittin, it's just about as fast as you can put em in," said Giesking.

"I caught three walleyes and five yellows in 30 minutes," said Lyle Kline.

"Seen some really nice fish, like 6-10 pound walleyes,” said Crazy Minnow Company’s Dan Krauth.

Just about everyone casting their lines or dropping their hooks are hitting big, and catching their limit for walleyes in record time.

"When I bought minnows the guy said it won't take you long to get three walleyes," said Giesking.

But is it all too good to be true? Department of Natural Resources Scott Grummer says no. This fisherman’s bliss doesn't come with a "catch."

“There's not really such thing as too good fishing. What it shows is a good class of fishing," said Grummer.

The Iowa DNR stocks Clear Lake with about 16 million "fry" or baby walleye a year. Of course only a very small percentage of them live. Still, that leaves a whole lot of fish to be caught.

"I just love to fish. I'd sooner fish than eat," said Giesking.

Judging by the tales we're hearing, he will probably do both on this night.

KIMT News Three’s Greg Berry will host Clear Lake's Walleye Classic next weekend.
