Iowa School is Back in Session Following Asbestos Scare by Michael Benning
KIMT News 3

Bancroft, IA- An asbestos scare is over, and a local school is back in session after it was closed for a week. If they had it their way, they might just play all day.

"I wanna play with my friends and get to know them," said fourth grader Brianna Schroder.

For the past week, the students at North Kossuth Elementary in Bancroft had an unscheduled break from school.

"I just get to sit back and relax, and stay at home,” said fourth grader Chandler Meyer.

Others like fourth grader Brianna Schroder did other kinds of work.

"I helped my dad with a trailer he's putting together," said Schroder.

While kids stayed home, experts cleaned and did more testing to make sure there are no asbestos problems in the elementary school building.

"There was like air going on in the school. It was like poisonous or something," said fourth grader Sarah Rolling.

"We had “spestos” in our ceilings," said Meyer.

Thankfully the newest test results are clear. There are no asbestos problems. That means it's back to work for students. Kindergarten teacher Nicole Shillington says it's a little harder for kids to buckle down and focus after the time off.

"We go with the flow knowing today is going to be kind of wild,” said kindergarten teacher Nicole Shillington.

Now they'll make a final push to finish up for the summer. Students will make up the days they missed. It's also the last year they will use the building in Bancroft. Next year, they will go to school in Swea City.
